Kalmes Restaurant has been a cornerstone of the St. Donatus, Iowa community since 1850, making us one of the oldest continuously operated family-owned businesses in the region. Founded by Grandpa Peter Kalmes as a bar in a historic red pebble stone building, our establishment has evolved through five generations to become a beloved dining destination and catering service. Over 160 years of operation have allowed us to refine our craft, combining traditional hospitality with modern culinary excellence. Our dining rooms, adorned with vintage photographs of Luxembourg heritage families, offer a unique historical ambiance that complements our hearty Midwestern cuisine. We expanded our offerings in 1982 with a dedicated dining room and further enhanced our facilities in 1995 with the addition of the Luxembourg Dining Room. Today, led by fifth-generation member Jimmy Kalmes Jr., we continue to serve both locals and travelers with authentic meals and exceptional catering services.

Our commitment to quality remains unwavering, as evidenced by our recognition in national media including Food Network's 'Feasting on Asphalt' and the Iowa Restaurant Association's Champion of the Year Award. We maintain traditional values while adapting to contemporary needs, offering ADA-accessible banquet facilities that accommodate up to 80 guests. Our menu features classic American dishes prepared with care, from our signature prime rib to family-style banquet options.
